Naan or roti? How to choose bread for your curry

By Samway Grill · · 3 min read

Choosing naan or roti is part of choosing how you want to eat your curry. Bread gives you something to tear and scoop; rice catches sauce in a different way. At Samway Grill, the bread section also includes garlic, butter and filled options, so the decision can be about flavour as much as texture.

Start with plain, butter or garlic naan

Plain Naan is a useful partner when you want to concentrate on the curry. Butter Naan adds a richer finish, while Garlic Naan brings a more pronounced flavour of its own. With several curries on the table, plain bread can move between them without making every bite taste the same.

If you already know you like garlic with tomato-and-onion sauces, try Garlic Naan alongside Karahi Chicken or Karahi Paneer. With Butter Chicken or a creamy korma, choose whether you want that extra garlic flavour or a simpler bread. These are pairing suggestions, not fixed rules.

Where tandoori roti fits

Tandoori Roti is another clay-oven bread on Samway’s menu. Our bread guide describes it as a whole-wheat option with an earthier character than naan. It is worth considering with lentil dishes, chickpeas or vegetable curries when you want a straightforward bread alongside the main.

The menu also includes Garlic Tandoori Roti. If your decision is really about garlic rather than the bread style, that gives you another option. Read the current naan, roti and sides menu before settling on your combination.

Treat a filled bread as a bigger flavour choice

Potato Naan, Cheesy Garlic Naan and Coconut Honey Naan each bring something more specific to the order. A filled or sweet-leaning bread need not play the same supporting role as Plain Naan. Consider how its filling or topping will sit beside the sauce you have chosen.

For example, if you want to compare two curries, plain bread may make their differences easier to notice. If the bread itself is what you are craving, build around it instead. Check the live ordering description for ingredients and current availability rather than assuming every naan has the same recipe.

Do you need both bread and rice?

For a shared meal, both can be useful because people can eat the curries in different ways. For a smaller order, one may be enough for the meal you have planned. Check whether a group combo already includes naan and rice before adding duplicates.

Biryani already centres on seasoned rice, so bread is an optional addition rather than an automatic requirement. When you are ready, use Samway’s live ordering menu to review the whole basket together. It is easier to notice repeated sides there than while choosing each curry separately.
